Teacup Pomeranian: Complete Guide 101

What Is a Teacup Pomeranian?

All Pomeranian dogs are considered toy dogs because of their small size. Did you know that Pomeranians were originally sled dogs? They are now bred as much smaller lapdogs. Because Pomeranians are so small to begin with, there really is no recognized breed known as a teacup Pomeranian or miniature Pom.

Since Pomeranians already weigh between just 3 and 7 pounds on average, you can’t really get smaller than that. However, some breeders will sell their pups as teacup Pomeranians and may even try to charge more for them. Canine associations will tell you that there is no teacup Pomeranian or miniature. Breeders simply use it as a marketing term for the smaller-sized pups they’ve bred.

If you locate a smaller-than-average Pomeranian, it’s very likely that the breeder used two runts to have puppies, which is very unethical practice. The pups could’ve also been inbred, which is highly unethical as well. It’s in everybody’s interest – especially the animals – if you don’t support breeders who practice that way.

If you’re looking for a teacup Pomeranian, there really is no such thing. You can make your search simpler by looking for a traditional Pomeranian and there are many of them to be found. Pomeranians do vary a little bit in size but they’re all quite small.

If size is a big factor and you’re really looking for a small Pomeranian speak with breeders who have smaller breeding dogs. If a Pomeranian is lighter than 3 pounds as an adult, they probably aren’t healthy. Their bodily organs will have to work much harder than they should be which can cause the animal to pass at a much younger age.

Just remember that if you obtain a Pomeranian who is much smaller than the average pup, you will likely have to deal with them having a number of health problems. This isn’t fair to you or the animal. For this reason, it’s best to not support breeders who are advertising “teacup Pomeranians” for sale. If you locate a breeder who is doing as such it wouldn’t be a bad idea to report them.

The best place to locate a Pomeranian dog or puppy is by visiting your local animal shelter. There are millions of animals rescued each year who are in need of happy homes. There will usually be an adoption fee of some kind but it’s going to be much lower than what a typical breeder will charge for their pups – especially Pomeranian breeders.

Whether you call them Pomeranians or teacup Pomeranians they are really great pups to have. One important fact to know about Pomeranians is that females are more dominant than males. They’re more likely to get into fights with other females. However, they’re very loyal to their owners, affectionate and quite independent as well.
