How much would it cost to take my pomeranian to hawaii in a airplane?

I am planning to take my pomeranian with me to hawaii for the summer for a week and i want to know how much it would cost to take my pom on the airplane and will he be with me or in the back somwhere. He is about 5 pounds, less then that. How much would it cost? Thanks

You need to contact the airline as some airlines will not allow pets on board. I use Continental, and since your dog is tiny, you should have no problem. Just make sure s/he is up to date on all shots, has an airline-approved soft-side carrier (like Sherpa), and be prepared to pay over $200.

Also, before you even contact the airlines, contact the State of Hawaii (try their website and find links to traveling there with pets); there may be some restrictions on bringing in pets, even from the States, for only a week.

Why not call the airlines and ask them?

usually it is about $200, but you have to call the airline to find out because some airlines you need to reserve a space for them and actually see if they take animals on that flight. Your dog is probably small enough to sit infront of you on the plane.

It all depends on the airline that you are traveling on. Call and ask, that's the easiest way to now for sure. It also depends if he will be with you or not (you can pick that, I believe).

Call whichever airline you plan to take. They have different rules and regs when it comes to traveling to Hawaii as opposed to the rest of the US. Your dog will also have to be quarantined before hand.

When I flew to Texas from California, the rate was 125 per way to have them in the cabin with you, but the carrier had to fit under the seat. The exact price is determined by the airline, and you can find the dimensions for the carrier on their respective website too, under pet policy. Get ready for some ugly looks though. People will think you're ridiculous. I wouldn't, but some will.

when your dog gets there they MUST be put in quarantine for *i think* its 30 days…i know its over a week. so just leave her with a dog sitter. its going to be over $150 on delta

even if your dog just had its shots, tests neg for everything..it doesn't matter…quarantine is a MUST for all dogs going in or out of hawaii.

its a LONG flight (been there done that) it would be hell for your dog anyway.

You won't be able to most likely. They have very strict rules about allowing other pets onto the islands. There is no rabies there & they want to keep it that way. The quarantine period is 90days or they have an alternator plan in place also I believe. I don't have the link but google Hawaii state dept. & it is on there.

If you are only going for a week, you would be better off to board your dog at home.

Hawaii quarantines all dogs that come in for at least 30 days.. it would be pointless to try to bring your dog with you, as he'd be in quarantine the entire time.

As far as I know, pets are not allowed in the cabin on flights to Hawaii. you will have to cargo the dog, which I really don't recommend.

To ship a pet in cargo costs around $250, the airlines goes by kennel size and weight. carry on is less if the crate fits under the seat.
However, i don't think Hawaii will allow your pet in to the state with out long preparations, there could be a long quarantine time. Up to a week if your pet had all the proper vaccines and blood titers drawn.120 days if no preparation were made.
Hawaii is rabies free state and aims to remain that way.
